Giovanni De Francesco

Structural Engineer
M.Sc. (Eng) Ph.D. (Structures)

Giovanni is a professional civil structural engineer with international experience obtained within Italy, United States, Guatemala and New Zealand.

He joined NZCEL in October 2016 and his computational analysis expertise is applied primarily in the detailed seismic assessment of medium to high-rise commercial buildings. In the previous work experience at PreCon (Guatemala), Giovanni was chief structural engineer responsible for research and development of innovative precast concrete systems implementing PRESSS technology.

Giovanni holds a Ph.D. in Earthquake and Structural Engineering from studies at the University of Catania in Italy and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). His main area of research was on the advanced seismic design of resilient precast systems for industrial buildings. At UCSD, Giovanni had the privilege to be involved in large-scale experimental projects of Self-centering Precast Concrete Dual-Shell Steel Rocking Columns, (PEER Project), and base-isolated buildings (BNCs Project). Thanks to a research fellowship obtained at the University of Catania, he expanded his theoretical knowledge on Design and Retrofit of Buildings with Passive Supplemental Dampers and Base Isolation Systems.

In his spare time, Giovanni enjoys ongoing researching in the earthquake and structural engineering field while listening to classical music.
